The basics

What size counts as a large metal print?

Most people consider a metal print large once it reaches about 20 × 30 or 24 × 36 inches. Popular oversized sizes are 30 × 40, 36 × 48 and 40 × 60 inches. The right one for you depends on your wall space, how far away people will stand, and the shape of your photo.

Some photos just look cramped at 8 × 10. The mountain range you hiked, the wedding shot everyone asks for, the skyline from your first apartment. Printed big, they stop being a photo on the wall and become the reason people walk into the room.

Size is also where metal really earns its keep. A large canvas can start to sag and a large framed print gets heavy and reflective behind glass. A ChromaLuxe panel stays flat and light, and the colour sits inside the coating, so it looks as crisp across a 60-inch span as it does up close.

Size guide

Which large metal print size should I choose?

Choose a print about two-thirds to three-quarters the width of the furniture below it. Over a standard 84-inch sofa, that’s roughly 56 to 63 inches wide, so a 40 × 60 print fits well and a 36 × 48 works for a smaller look. Leave 8 to 10 inches between the furniture and the bottom of the print.

Match the orientation to your photo. Wide landscapes and panoramas want a horizontal print; portraits, wedding shots and tall scenery like waterfalls or trees look best vertical.

A quick trick before you order: cut a piece of kraft paper or painter’s tape the size of the print and stick it on the wall for a day. You’ll know straight away whether it feels right.

Photo resolution

Will my photo look good as a large metal print?

Aim for about 150 pixels per inch at your print size. That means roughly 3000 × 4500 pixels for a 20 × 30 print, 4500 × 6000 for 30 × 40, and 6000 × 9000 for 40 × 60. Large prints are viewed from further away, so slightly lower resolution often still looks sharp.

Most modern phones, mirrorless cameras and DSLRs can handle large prints when the shot is sharp, well exposed and not cropped heavily. Always upload the original file. Screenshots and photos sent through messaging apps or downloaded from social media are compressed and lose the detail a big print needs.

Why metal

Why choose metal for large wall art?

Metal is usually better for large photographs. Big canvas prints can sag, ripple in humidity and collect dust in the weave, while a metal panel stays flat, shows finer detail and wipes clean. Canvas still suits painterly art where a soft texture is part of the look.

Detail holds up at size

Big prints expose every weakness in a material. ChromaLuxe keeps lines sharp and contrast deep, with no fabric texture showing through.

No glass, no bulky frame

The panel is the artwork. No glare off a huge sheet of glass and no heavy moulding to hang.

Easy to live with

A quick wipe with a microfibre cloth keeps it clean, which matters in busy family rooms, offices and restaurants.

Built to hang properly

Choose a mount designed for large panels and it sits flat and secure as a centrepiece for years.

Finishes and mounts

Which finish and mount should I choose for a large print?

Choose high-gloss for landscapes and colourful, high-contrast photos where you want maximum impact. Choose semi-gloss for portraits and bright rooms, because a larger surface catches more reflections from windows and lights. If you’re unsure, semi-gloss is the safer pick for big pieces.

Finishes

High-gloss

The brightest colour and deepest blacks. Best for landscapes, travel photos, underwater shots and anything high-contrast.

Think twice for: Walls directly opposite a big window, where reflections can be distracting.

Semi-gloss

Rich colour with softer reflections. Best for portraits, wedding photos and bright rooms with lots of windows or pot lights.

Think twice for: Nothing in particular. It’s the safe choice if you’re unsure.

Mounting options

Exhibit (float) mount

A mount on the back holds the panel off the wall so it seems to float, with a clean shadow line around the edges. The most popular look for large pieces.

Hanging strip

A low-profile strip that keeps the print closer to the wall. A simple, tidy option for hallways and offices.

Frame

Adds a finished border around the metal for a more traditional look in formal rooms.

The exact hardware included for each size is listed in the product options when you order.

Ordering

How do I order a large metal print?

Upload your image, review the crop and check out. We print it on ChromaLuxe aluminium and pack it carefully for the trip.

Ideas by room

Where do large metal prints work best?

Large metal prints work best on feature walls in living rooms, above beds, in offices and reception areas, at cottages, and in restaurants, hotels and galleries. Metal is especially good where art gets bumped, touched or exposed to humidity, because it wipes clean and doesn’t warp.

What is the largest metal print you offer?

Our largest standard size is 40 × 60 in. If you need something bigger or an unusual shape for a home, gallery or commercial space, contact us with your measurements and we’ll let you know what’s possible and send a custom quote.

What size metal print should I hang above a sofa or bed?

Choose a print about two-thirds to three-quarters the width of the furniture below it. Over a standard 84-inch sofa, that’s roughly 56 to 63 inches wide, so a 40 × 60 print fits well and a 36 × 48 works for a smaller look. Leave 8 to 10 inches between the furniture and the bottom of the print.

What resolution do I need for a large metal print?

Aim for about 150 pixels per inch at your print size. That means roughly 3000 × 4500 pixels for a 20 × 30 print, 4500 × 6000 for 30 × 40, and 6000 × 9000 for 40 × 60. Large prints are viewed from further away, so slightly lower resolution often still looks sharp.

Can I use an iPhone or Android photo for a large metal print?

Often, yes. Recent phones take 12 to 50 megapixel photos, which can look great at 20 × 30 or 24 × 36 inches when the shot is sharp and not heavily cropped. Upload the original file, not a screenshot or a photo sent by text. For 40 × 60, a camera file is usually the safer choice.

Are large metal prints heavy?

They’re lighter than framed glass of the same size. A standard 0.045-inch aluminium panel weighs roughly 0.6 pounds per square foot, so a 24 × 36 panel is about 4 pounds and a 40 × 60 panel is about 10 pounds before mounting hardware. The mount adds some weight, so always use suitable wall anchors.

How do I hang a large metal print?

Follow the instructions for the mount you chose. Mark your centre point, use a level, and screw into a stud or use drywall anchors rated well above the print’s weight. For 36 × 48 inches and up, have a second person hold the panel by its edges while you hang it.

Should I choose a gloss or semi-gloss finish for a large print?

Choose high-gloss for landscapes and colourful, high-contrast photos where you want maximum impact. Choose semi-gloss for portraits and bright rooms, because a larger surface catches more reflections from windows and lights. If you’re unsure, semi-gloss is the safer pick for big pieces.

Do large metal prints ship free in Canada?

Many orders ship free across Canada. Very large panels need extra packaging and sometimes special carrier handling, so the shipping cost for your size and address is shown at checkout before you pay. Contact us first if you’re ordering several big pieces.

Is metal or canvas better for large wall art?

Metal is usually better for large photographs. Big canvas prints can sag, ripple in humidity and collect dust in the weave, while a metal panel stays flat, shows finer detail and wipes clean. Canvas still suits painterly art where a soft texture is part of the look.

Do you offer trade or bulk pricing for businesses and designers?

Yes. We work with photographers, artists, interior designers and businesses such as offices, hotels and restaurants. Contact us with your sizes, quantities and timeline to ask about trade pricing, bulk orders, custom dimensions and installation needs.

How do I clean a large metal print?

Dust it with a dry microfibre cloth. For fingerprints, lightly dampen the cloth with water and a drop of mild soap, wipe gently and dry it. Avoid paper towels, abrasive pads and cleaners with ammonia or alcohol. On big panels, work in sections so you don’t press hard on the middle.
